An outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infection associated with unpasteurized non-commercial, custom-pressed apple cider--Ontario, 1998.

چکیده
On 28 October 1998, the Perth District Health Unit received two reports of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infection presenting as bloody diarrhea, in an unrelated child and a young adult from opposite ends of Perth County. The public-health inspector found that the only risk factor for each person was consumption of unpasteurized apple cider. In the child’s family, a sibling and the child’s mother were also ill; all had consumed cider from their grandparents’ farm. The young adult had received his cider from someone at work. Through further inquiries, it was learned that it also originated from the same source. An investigation into the cider and its recipients was carried out.

Qualitative Microbiological Risk Assessment of Unpasteurized Fruit Juice and Cider
Until recent decades, unpasteurized fruit juice and cider have been considered non-hazardous with respect to microbiological pathogens due to their acidic nature. However, in light of the many global foodborne illness outbreaks associated with these products, it is apparent that certain bacterial, viral and parasitic pathogens can survive these acidic conditions and remain infectious. Specifica...
متن کاملFate of Escherichia coli O157:H7 on fresh-cut apple tissue and its potential for transmission by fruit flies.
Pathogenic Escherichia coli O157:H7, as well as nonpathogenic strains ATCC 11775 and ATCC 23716, grew exponentially in wounds on Golden Delicious apple fruit. The exponential growth occurred over a longer time period on fruit inoculated with a lower concentration of the bacterium than on fruit inoculated with a higher concentration. The bacterium reached the maximum population supported in the ...
متن کاملAqueous extracts of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) as a natural antimicrobial against Escherichia coli O157:H7 in a microbiological medium and pH 6.0 apple juice.
Ilex paraguariensis is popularly used in the preparation of a tea infusion (yerba mate), most commonly produced and consumed in the South American countries of Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. In this study, aqueous extracts of commercial tea, derived from the holly plant species I. paraguariensis were evaluated for their ability to inhibit or inactivate Escherichia coli O157:H7 in a ...
متن کاملAn outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 hemorrhagic colitis associated with unpasteurized gouda cheese.
BACKGROUND A cluster of E. coli O157:H7 hemorrhagic colitis was identified in metro Edmonton, Alberta through notifiable disease surveillance in late 2002. METHODS Environmental health officers collected food histories and clinical information from cases in the cluster. The provincial public health laboratory conducted pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis on E. coli O157:H7 isolat...
متن کاملRecent Trends in Microbiological Safety of Fruits and Vegetables
The number of documented outbreaks of human infections associated with the consumption of raw fruits, vegetables, and unpasteurized fruit juices has increased in recent years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the U.S. the number of reported produce-related outbreaks per year doubled between the period 1973-1987 and 1988-1992 (2,24). During both time periods, the e...
